LPN Jobs

LPN jobs are responsible for caring for patients while under the direction of registered nurses and physicians. Licensed practical nurses provide beside care by monitoring the patient's vital signs and charting the data, administering injections, and feeding the patients if they need assistance with eating. Working a standard 40 hour week in mainly hospitals and nursing care facilities, LPN nurses may also have to provide care for patients around the clock, extending their usual working hours.

Prospective job seekers should be prepared to take and pass a licensing examination in all States, after completing a State approved practical nursing program before attaining LPN careers. In 2006, there were 1,500 State approved training programs for practical nurses.

In 2006, there were nearly 750,000 lpn jobs with an almost even percentage of workers employed at hospitals and nursing care facilities with a smaller percentage working in physician's offices. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected increase of 14 percent during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This rate of LPN employment will be faster than the national average for all occupations as a result of the rising demand in healthcare services from the growing elderly population. Prospective licenses practical nurse job seekers should expect excellent job opportunities because of the employment growth and the opportunities created by the need to replace workers that change careers or workers that opt to exit the work force entirely.
