A dental worker primary responsibility is maintaining their patients' teeth and gums. Some specific responsibilities include: routine cleaning, corrective procedures such as filling cavities, diet and brushing tips and minor surgical procedures. Dentists generally complete 8 years of schooling after completion of high school. This includes obtaining a bachelor's degree, completion of dental school and often practicing 1-2 years as a dental associate before starting their own practice.
Dental jobs are expected to grow about as fast as the national average according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.) In addition, the median average income for dentists was $136,960 as of May 2006 BLS data. As many older dentists are leaving the profession, it is expected that dentists just coming out of college will be able to meet this demand.
