ICU Jobs
An ICU job requires a physician to observe their patient's condition closely providing extra care whenever necessary. Individuals with ICU jobs collaborate with other members of the healthcare team as they complete their usual responsibilities including prescribing and administering medication and performing procedures on patients. These professionals must also consult with the families of patients as to what their choice of treatment may be and deathbed care.
Educationally, prospective ICU job seekers should satisfy requirements for a bachelor's degree and take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) to become a competitive medical school applicant. After 4 years of medical school, a 2 to 6 year internship or residency program must be completed. A board test in internal medicine must then be passed to become certified with 2 years of graduate fellowship training in critical care. A certification exam for critical care medicine must also be passed.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a 22 percent increase in employment for physicians over the course of the 2008 to 2018 decade. This increase will be faster than the national employment for all occupations with the demand related to the expansions in the healthcare system, a rising elderly population, and advancements in medical technology. This will lead to very favorable job opportunities for prospective job seekers over the next decade.
