Speech Language Pathologist Jobs

Speech language pathologist jobs are responsible for testing, diagnosing, and treating disorders related to speech, language, cognitive-communication, and fluency problems. These professionals develop an individualized plan for their patients in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team and evaluate the progress of communication development.

A master's degree is the most common educational level for professionals with this career. Many colleges and universities offer graduate level speech-language programs that include anatomy, physiology, and psychological aspects of communication. Licensure and certification is required in 47 states as of 2009 in which some states may require a master's degree, a passing score on the national exam of speech – language pathology, 300 to 375 hours of supervised clinical experience, and 9 months of postgraduate clinical experience.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected 19 percent increase over the course of the 2008 to the 2018 decade. This rate of employment will be faster than the national average for all occupations with the demand a result of several points including expanding healthcare services, a rising population, and advancements in medical technology.
